Android L - Features and User Interface

Google has introduced its new version of Android Operating System i.e. Android 5.0 L. Google showed the new software off at Google I/O 2014. The first things about Android 5.0 is that it looks quite different to the current Android Kitkat (4.4). Google has come up with a new interface look called Material. Well, If you're a developer with a Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 then it will be easiest for you as it is being available from June 26 to developers only. HTC is already excited and has committed to roll out the updates to HTC One M8 ,M7 in regions worldwide within 90 days of receiving final software from Google.

Here are some features and changes on Android L

Material Design

Android L is the change to the way it looks. It feels more intuitive, which means that there will be shadow gradients, 3D tiles that slide over one another and most importantly, access fro developers to use this for themselves on their apps. Roboto font has been updated too. Every animation on screen will be allowed to connect to one another- so there's no teleportation between apps. The capacitive home, back and multi-tasking buttons have been refined too and looks clean.

Notifications and lock screen

The notification panel is being merged with the lockscreen so you can see what's going on as you pick up the phone, and a simple swipe up takes you into the phone. Android L will also learn from you, working out what you look at and interact with more often to prioritize that notification. Another change is that notifications will flow over the screen at the top. The lockscreen is getting smarter too- if you've got a specific location set up or wearing a Bluetooth device, the phone will recognise you and unlock without a PIN. Move away or take you watch off and you'll need to tap or swipe in a code when you unlock- or you can even use your voice.

Android L is Faster

Android L is the fastest among all the android versions. Android L works with ARM, x86 and MIPS platforms and run twice as fast as the Dalvik runtime. ART is also 64-bit compatible allowing Android L to benefit from the larger number registers, cross platform support and the increased RAM support.

Android L battery life

Phone's batteries running Android L are going to become more efficient with Project Volta, Google's new way of showing why and how a phone's power pack is juicing down. Battery Saver mode is integrated by default too.

New System icons

Android L is coming with new icons which are a much clearer and more friendly and look to fit in well with the new style of Android L

New Google Keyboard

With Android L, Google is introducing new keyboard with a number of fairly significant changes. The separation between keys has been removes, favouring a much more unified approach.

New Selections Interface

The UI response hints when making a selection also appear to have changed in Android L. The visual feedback of a touch event appears to be a visible on-screen circle, with the currently selected option in pop-out menus a light grey.

Simplified App Settings Interface

The App Settings interface appears to have been changed with a much clearer and more linear sectioned interface.
